The Buttercross, Ludlow, Shropshire. by Spencer Ford.(1902 to 1990) A well known local artist to this Medieval Town. The Buttercross is a signed print by Spencer of this historic building. A signed print is a rare item. As watercolours were Spencer’s forte, such was his passion he taught aspiring artists the skills painting in this media. He was a member of the Royal Watercolour Society, and Society of Painters in Watercolours.
For a number of years he had his own Gallery in Linnet View, Ludlow. Recently two watercolours I’ve sold: ‘The Village’ and Ludlow Castle had Spencer’s original gallery details and prices on the rear. I have met a number of local residents who knew and remember him , even describing paintings they had commissioned from him.
The Buttercross print is dated 1987 and signed. It measures 18″ wide x 15.5″ high. To this day on a Saturday and certain days in the week the Arched area of the building is used by the local market traders. A monument to the town’s history and character.
